Joo Chiat has always had character, but these days the old Peranakan neighbourhood is hitting a sweet spot — enough new openings to keep things interesting, without losing the charm that made it special in the first place. If you have not wandered its streets in a while, this weekend is a great time to revisit.

Start With Breakfast

Kick off at Birds of Paradise (63 East Coast Road) for a scoop of their white chrysanthemum gelato — yes, even at 10 am, nobody will judge you. For something more substantial, Sinpopo Brand next door does excellent nasi lemak and proper kopi. Their pandan chiffon cake is also one of the best on the island.

Explore the Streets

Walk down Koon Seng Road for the iconic pastel Peranakan shophouses — still one of the most photographed streets in Singapore. From there, cut through to Joo Chiat Road and poke your head into Rumah Bebe, a Peranakan heritage shop selling hand-beaded slippers and kebaya. It doubles as a mini museum and the owner is generous with stories.

Lunch Options

For lunch, Smokey Boys BBQ (267 Joo Chiat Road) does low-and-slow American barbecue with a local twist — their brisket fried rice is legendary. Alternatively, Bao Makers at 305 Joo Chiat Road serves creative gua bao fillings like rendang beef and salted egg prawn. Both spots get packed after 12:30 pm, so arrive early.

Afternoon and Evening

Spend the afternoon browsing Cat Socrates for quirky local books and stationery, then grab a craft beer at Kult Yard, an open-air bar tucked behind a row of shophouses. As evening rolls in, dinner at Kok Sen on Keong Saik (a short drive away) or a quiet meal at Folklore along Destination Road keeps the Peranakan theme going with refined heritage dishes.

Joo Chiat rewards slow exploration. Skip the car, wear comfortable shoes, and let the neighbourhood unfold at its own pace.
