Tanjong Pagar has a new secret. Tucked behind an unmarked door on Tras Street, Cipher is the kind of bar that rewards the curious. There's no sign, no Instagram-friendly neon — just a brass door knocker shaped like a key and a bouncer who'll ask if you have a reservation. You do not walk in off the street. You plan.
Opened in February 2026 by bar duo Marcus Loh and Priya Nair, Cipher is built around a single concept: the cocktail as a puzzle. Every drink on the menu is a riddle — literally. The menu card arrives as a folded cipher sheet, and each cocktail's name is encoded. Decode it correctly, and you unlock a 10% discount on your next round. It's a gimmick that sounds exhausting on paper but works beautifully in execution, mostly because the drinks themselves are exceptional enough to hold your attention between games.
The opening menu runs to 14 cocktails. Stand-outs include the First Clue — a smoky Mezcal and tamarind concoction with a rim of charcoal salt that reads bitter-first, then bright — and the Seven Locks, a stirred rum and coconut cream number that is dangerously dessert-like without tipping into saccharine. Spirits are largely regional: Malaysian botanicals, Thai spirits, Filipino cane sugar rum. The team is committed to keeping the drinks anchored in Southeast Asia even as the concept leans European-speakeasy.
The space seats 28. Exposed concrete walls are broken up by backlit panels of amber glass and vintage combination locks mounted like art pieces. It feels like a film set — the good kind, not the try-hard kind. Music is low and jazz-adjacent. Conversation carries. This is not a place for birthday shots.
Reservations are mandatory and currently filling up two weeks out. Weekend slots go within hours of dropping on their website each Monday morning. Walk-ins are accommodated only if there's a cancellation, and that's rare. If you're serious about going, set an alarm.
Cocktails are priced between $22 and $32. A short bar snacks menu — think truffle popcorn, wagyu sliders — runs $10–$28. There's no dress code but the crowd skews smart-casual. Flip flops will earn you a look.
Cipher is exactly what Tanjong Pagar's already-strong bar scene needed: something with a point of view that isn't just another whisky cave or gin parlour. Go before the secret is fully out.
