Move over, hot yoga. The latest wellness trend sweeping Singapore involves getting very, very cold. Cold plunge studios — dedicated spaces where you submerge yourself in ice-cold water for recovery, mental clarity, and an endorphin rush — have been opening across the island, and they are drawing everyone from CrossFit regulars to stressed-out office workers.

The biggest name so far is Frost SG, which launched its first studio in Duxton Hill in January. The concept is straightforward: private plunge rooms with tubs chilled to between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius, paired with infrared sauna sessions for contrast therapy. A 60-minute session (30 minutes sauna, four rounds of 2-minute plunges with guided breathing) costs $65. Founder Darren Koh says bookings have exceeded projections by 40 percent since opening.

"People come in nervous and leave on a high," Koh explains. "The cold triggers a massive dopamine release — about 250 percent above baseline, according to some studies. It is like a natural mood booster that lasts for hours."

Frost is not alone. Submerse opened in Tanjong Pagar in February with a group plunge format — up to six people share a large ice bath guided by a certified breathwork coach ($45 per person). It has become popular for team-building sessions, with several tech companies booking regular slots.

At the premium end, The Cold Room in Robertson Quay offers a full cold wellness circuit: cryotherapy chamber, ice plunge pool, cold rain shower, and a warming lounge with herbal teas. The 90-minute experience runs $120 and includes a post-session recovery smoothie.

Is it safe? Practitioners recommend starting with warmer temperatures (10 degrees) and shorter durations (60–90 seconds), building up gradually. People with cardiovascular conditions should consult a doctor first. Most studios require a health declaration before your first session.

For the curious, Frost SG offers a $40 introductory trial that includes coaching on breathing technique — arguably the most important part of surviving your first plunge. Walk-ins are accepted on weekdays, but weekend slots tend to fill up by Thursday.
